“The music teacher sets a process in motion, rather than imposing it… the teacher’s role is to instruct the student in the art of self-correction, or analysing and of thinking, taking decisions, then applying them to the task in hand. The teacher’s ultimate aim is for the student to become independent – to become a master rather than a pupil – which the teacher must be both.”

On holding a bow…“I should be able to blow on your hand and it should move.”

“We already have the basis for a child to develop on its own. They need just a little push; it is a question of opening ears and eyes…I want the pupils to leave with an impeccable understanding and execution of every style – classical, baroque and contemporary.”

“My childhood was remarkably free from the deforming effects of competition. The standards against which I measured my achievements were the highest, and the attempt was made in reverent awe, not in a desire to be acknowledged superior.”
